Thinking of studying at our School of Jewellery? Alongside learning in our beautifully historic Vittoria Street building, there’s plenty you can get up to after class and in your spare time in the Jewellery Quarter. Read on to find out about our top five things to do.
1. Shop with local, independent businesses
If you enjoy supporting local businesses, the Jewellery Quarter has plenty of wonderfully unique shops to choose from.
The Borrow Shop stocks a host of treasures, from greetings cards and art prints to reusable coffee cups and cacti. On top of this, they have a unique borrowing system in which you can loan items for a small fee. Whilst you’re there, be sure to grab one of their vegan cookies that are freshly baked and delivered every week! Pair it with one of their matcha latte’s and you’re all set for the day.
Right next door you will find Cash and Cash Co., a quaint shop described as a ‘modern general store’ specialising in curated, accessible and sustainable goods. You can find everything from candles to freshly pressed juices here!
2. Relax in its green spaces
Whilst still being central, the Jewellery Quarter prides itself in being away from the main hustle and bustle of the city centre. Because of this, you can find plenty of quiet outdoor spaces to relax and pass the time in. Birmingham itself is one of the greenest cities in the UK, with over 8,000 acres of green space.
Take a stroll through St. Paul’s Square, the last remaining Georgian square in the entire city. Nearby, you will also find Burbury Park and Great Kings Street Park.
3. Learn about its history
Did you know Jewellery Quarter produces 40% of the UK’s jewellery? Every corner of the Jewellery Quarter is packed full of rich history.
Chamberlain Clock was built in 1903 and has recently been through restorations due to damage and weathering. It now stands proudly in the heart of the Jewellery Quarter.
There are also several museums within the Jewellery Quarter, including the pen museum, which delves into Birmingham’s steel pen trade.
Of course, the Jewellery Quarter wouldn’t have its name if it wasn’t full to the brim with jewellery shops. Take a leisurely stroll through and window shop as you go.
4. Eat at unique restaurants
There’s certainly an abundance of places to eat in the city centre, but when it comes to the Jewellery Quarter, you can find unique and independent restaurants that you won’t find anywhere else.
If you want a South American feast filled with freshly made tacos and more, Tierra is the place to go. Otto is a homey spot where you can enjoy wood fired pizzas and charcuterie boards, and The Rolling Mill specialises in British and European comfort food with a warm and friendly atmosphere
There are plenty of other spots to choose from, no matter what your preference.
5. Let your hair down!
If you’re more of a do-er and love trying new hobbies or getting involved in various activities, there are plenty of hidden gems in the Jewellery Quarter you can get stuck into.
Situated just off St. Paul’s Square you will find The Jam House, a jazz, blues and rock club that hosts live music several days of the week - get your dancing shoes on!
Want to try something sporty? Depot climbing centre is a great way to exercise in a unique way. There are also several escape rooms in the area for those who fancy some challenging fun with friends.
If you prefer learning a new creative skill, Pavlov Ceramics hosts a range of pottery classes in which you can create and take home your very own ceramics!
