Starting your postgraduate studies with us soon? We’re looking forward to welcoming you! If you want to get a head start on your studies and get clued up on what’s to come, take a look at our list of resources for things you can do to prepare for your course.
Reading and Research
To keep up to date with the latest practices and news in the world of jewellery, check out the websites for the Association for Contemporary Jewellery, SNAG, The Goldsmiths’ Company, and BAMS. These sites all cover slightly different sectors of the jewellery industry, but learning about all areas will help you with your studies.
You’ll also find it beneficial to read about our School of Jewellery alumni, who have gone on to start their own businesses, work for huge brands, won prestigious awards, and more:
- Keith Scobie-Youngs set up Cumbria Clock Company, who went on to work on the Big Ben restorations.
- Barickeh Koroma is the managing director at the West African Gem Academy.
- Karen McKinley is a self-employed jewellery designer and tutor.
Visit
You will gain a lot from visiting one of our Postgraduate open days. Here, you will be able to take a look around our incredible School of Jewellery facilities, housed at the beautiful and historic Margaret Street campus.
The Jewellery Quarter is also filled with jewellery shops, museums, and plenty more things to see and do relating to the craft of jewellery. Some of our top picks are J.W. Evans Silver Factory, Museum of the Jewellery Quarter and Jewellery Quarter Heritage Trail.
Other than the state-of-the-art facilities on campus, everything you need to learn your craft is situated right on your doorstep, from 3D print studios, retailers, casting houses, polishers and more. Get stuck in and learn a new craft or polish up on an existing one!
Watch
We highly recommend watching the BBC Two show, All That Glitters, as it was filmed at our very own School of Jewellery! Not only will you get a sneak peek at our beautiful campus buildings, but you’ll also get to see fellow jewellery makers in action showing off their craft. Pick up tips from the expert judges or inspiration from the pieces that are made.
Other than this, you can check out the BCU YouTube channel for information on student life, facilities, and further course details. There are several videos dedicated to the School of Jewellery and our jewellery facilities and courses.
