'It’s difficult to narrow it down as for the last 6 years since graduating from BCU I have been fortunate enough to travel the world covering the biggest boxing events in that period.'
Graduate Andi Purewal talks us through some of his highlights in the media industry since he graduated from BCU.
My first trip to America as a journalist was to cover a fight which was Fury vs Wilder 1. The heavyweight trilogy has etched itself into history due to the back and forth nature of their fights, with the exception of the second. So much drama throughout and for their first bout to have been my first fight abroad is one I will never forget.
I was also fortunate to have been granted special travel authorisation from the United States government during the pandemic and I was one of about three British journalist who were able to travel to America at a time when nobody was allowed.

I was there for all of Canelo Alvarez’s victories on his way to claim undisputed supremacy in the super-middleweight division, but his fight with Billy Joe Saunders at the AT&T Stadium in Texas was a fight to remember. 73,000 fans in attendance and it is the largest indoor attendance ever at a boxing event. The noise was deafening when Canelo was introduced and he closed the show with a stoppage victory when Saunders was unable to continue due to an eye injury inflicted upon him.
A third favourite again, involves Mr Fury. Out in Saudi Arabia for the undisputed bout with Oleksandr Usyk, to see Usyk claim the heavyweight throne and become the first undisputed champion in 25 years since Lennox Lewis last held the crown. Another highlight was seeing Josh Taylor become undisputed champion in Las Vegas. The first British fighter to have become an undisputed champion in the four belt era of boxing.
My time at BCU helped me to develop and hone my skillset, whilst putting to use what I learned during my studies into the field when away covering events. I had a great support system in my tutors who encouraged my creative side and helped to direct my enthusiasm down a path suitable for me.
I will always remember my time at university fondly and will remain grateful to all who helped me in my early stages as a budding young journalist.
