Media is an extremely vast sector, but it’s also extremely exciting and diverse. It’s understandable that it may be hard to decipher what path of study to take, so we’ve compiled and broken down all of our School of Media courses to make it easier for you to determine which course is best for you.
Journalism

Our Journalism course is designed to cover a wide range of journalistic styles and features both practical and written modules. You’ll learn the basics of reporting on different media outlets and participate in live production days, where you’ll work as part of a real news team covering a range of topics. As well as this you’ll also learn about the power of journalism and be given the chance to report on a subject you’re passionate about.
A unique aspect of this course is its partnership with HuffPost UK, which gives you chance to receive tutorials and masterclasses from the HuffPost UK team themselves, as well as the opportunity to visit their bureaus.
Media and Communication (BA and HND)

This course focuses on production, theory and professional studies of media, emphasising that all aspects are equally important. It’s an extremely varied course, giving you the chance to specialise in a preferred area; from Television Studios, Photojournalism, Radio Documentary, Comedy in Media and Popular Culture, and much more; the options are endless. The course encourages you to take creative risks and be a thinking media worker.
You’ll also get the chance to work at least two placements to get you prepared for working in industry. Many students have completed placements at companies such as the BBC, The Guardian, Channel 4 and Universal Music.
Media and Communication is offered as both a BA and a HND, meaning you can get hands on with the subject before committing to a degree level course.
Media Production

The Media Production course is the perfect course to get you ‘industry-ready’ and allows you to specialise in either TV or radio production. Our School of Media has fantastic links to industry, with many of our academic staff having worked hands on in their specialist subject. You will also gain valuable insight from expert guest speakers, giving you a chance to network with professionals and make useful contacts.
One of the best features of this course is that you will get to learn hands on in our state-of-the-art £62 million Parkside Building facilities, which features industry standard TV and radio studios. You will be producing content and working on live productions from the very start, where your work will be broadcast across Birmingham audiences.
Music Business

Are you passionate about music? Did you know that music is one of the UK’s biggest exports? On the Music Business course, you will get to know all areas of the industry, from PR to promotion and producing music; this will enable you to decide which area you would like to specialise in. The course has a focus on music enterprise and entrepreneurship, which gives you creative freedom and allows you to be innovative.
You will also develop and work on real-life music industries projects with clients, which will allow you to add professional jobs onto your CV and portfolio. Year two of the course allows you to choose modules from other School of Media courses, some of which may be aligned with your area of study but also gives you a chance to branch out into something different.
Sports Journalism

Our Sports Journalism course gives you the chance to learn about journalistic techniques in a practical and theoretical environment whilst being able to focus on your knowledge and passion of sport. You will learn the basics of reporting for different sports outlets and work on live productions, where you will report on a range of sport topics and stories.
