Love the idea of caring for others? Do you see yourself as a compassionate, empathetic, and knowledgeable individual? If so, healthcare could be a great career path for you.
Whilst some of these careers may seem obvious, there are specialist areas you can go into that you may not have thought of. We offer a huge range of nursing courses, from dual awards to top-ups and more! Read on to find out what you can do with a healthcare degree.
Nursing and Specialties
It’s no secret that with a nursing degree you can become a nurse, however here at BCU we offer a large range of courses that allow you to specialise in an area that you’re passionate about. The areas we cover allow you to qualify for these roles:
- Adult Nurse
- Child Nurse
- Mental Health Nurse (children and adult)
- Learning Disability Nurse
All courses listed are available as a BSc (Hons) degree or as a Dual Award, meaning you’ll be able to specialise in two areas at once whilst obtaining a bachelor’s and credits towards a Master’s qualification. That’s without mentioning our top-up courses that allow you to specialise even further! Some of these specialisms include Diabetes Care, Burns and Plastic Surgery, Cardiac Care, and so many more.
Other than the listed specialties and roles, there are plenty more to choose from. For example, you could go on to become a health visitor, a nurse that visits and cares for people within their homes. You could also work in the fast paced environment of an emergency care service within a hospital, looking after those with urgent needs. You could also have the opportunity to become a matron (also known as a head nurse), overseeing other nurses and medical staff to ensure patients receive the best level of care possible.
Nursing in the Military
You may not have considered that nursing is a highly important role within the Armed Forces and makes for a unique and rewarding career. You’ll train as a nurse and also undertake professional military training to ensure you are the best person for the job.
We have close links with the Armed Forces and several of our qualifications will set you up for a career in the military, including DipHE Operating Department Practice (ODP), and BSc (Hons) Diagnostic Radiography for military personnel. This useful article gives more insight into how you can achieve this career.

Midwifery
Focusing on the journey of mother and baby, from pre-pregnancy all the way through to postpartum, midwifery is a highly emotive and hands on career that allows you to help mothers, babies, and families. Whilst a typical midwife works within a hospital on a birthing ward, they can also work within the community in women’s homes, GP surgeries, community centres and more.
You can choose to remain in the clinical field or branch off into a specialist subject, clinical research or re-enter university as the teacher! There are no limits – how fast and how far you go is up to you.
If you study our Midwifery course, you will be able to take advantage of the birthing area at our City South campus, alongside Simulation Babies. This allows you to gain hands-on experience and play out realistic situations before going out onto your placements.
