Amy, one of our BSc Midwifery students has given us some insight into how our unique Skills, Practice, and Care Enhancement (SPACE) room helped her during the challenges of her degree. SPACE prides itself on being an unpressured environment for students to come along and practise what they’ve learnt.
As a midwifery student, a challenging aspect I encountered with studying a healthcare course was the ability to transfer my theoretical knowledge into the clinical placement area. For me, there was only so much I could learn from lectures or textbook-related study alone, because fully grasping the clinical skills required putting my learning into practice.
This is most definitely where the S.P.A.C.E facility came in, as it has played a vital role in allowing me to practice the necessary skills in a relaxed and non-pressured environment. Enhancing essential skills before placements meant I could provide quality care for women and their babies.
S.P.A.C.E has been a brilliant resource for practising skills, both for the first time and also for revisiting and perfecting existing skills. In S.P.A.C.E, I have been able to practise a wide range of skills including venepuncture, clinical observations including manual blood pressure, catheterisation, obstetric emergencies, neonatal and adult life support.
The availability of real hospital equipment and realistic models in the facility is fantastic and facilitated my learning over the three years of my training. Finally, the efficient running of the facility relies on the amazingly friendly and knowledgeable technicians, in particular, Kelly, who will always go out of her way to provide students with a brilliant experience.
Looking back over the years of my course, regularly using the facility has no doubt helped me in passing my clinically related exams. Therefore, I thoroughly recommend S.P.A.C.E to all healthcare students!
