Why you should study Nursing and Midwifery in Birmingham

Interested in studying a nursing or midwifery degree? There are plenty of reasons why you should study it here in Birmingham. Read on to find out why.

Facilities

Over the last few years, we have invested £41 million into our City South campus in Edgbaston to provide specialist learning facilities for all Health, Education and Life Sciences courses.

Our learning spaces and equipment include mock wards, a home birth room and simulation manikins that allow you to practice real-life skills before going out on placement and into the workplace. We also have a place dedicated to helping you improve some of those key skills you need - SPACE (Skills Practice and Care Enhancement) - which is stocked with all you need to feel more confident when faced with real-life service users.

Placements

As a student at the School of Nursing and Midwifery, we understand placements are a big part of the experience you need. Placements can be daunting, but we’ll be here to support you every step of the way. Hear from our students about their placement experiences.

We’re lucky to be partnered with several NHS Trusts, including:

  • Birmingham Women and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust
  • University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust
  • Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust

You will also have the opportunity to go on plenty of trips and visits to relevant places, such as Queen Elizabeth Hospital, home to the largest critical care unit in Europe.

Careers

Being the UK’s second biggest city and incredibly ethnically diverse, Birmingham is one of the most beneficial places to reside in after completing your degree with career opportunities in abundance. Here are just some of the settings you could be working in:

  • Birmingham Children’s Hospital, which is home to one of the largest Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services in the country
  • Birmingham Women’s Hospital, which is one of two dedicated women’s hospitals in the UK, with the busiest single site maternity unit delivering more than 8,200 babies a year.
  • University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB), which is one of the largest teaching hospital trusts in England, serving a regional, national and international population.

All of our courses are regulated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), which means you will be able to apply for Registered Nurse or Midwife Status on completion. To find out more about the different paths you can take after completing your nursing degree, see our Employability page.
