Our state-of-the-art campus is the perfect place to undertake a psychology-related course, but other than that, what makes Birmingham so special, and why should you choose to study your degree here?
Facilities
As a psychology student, you will have access to a wide range of psychology testing labs to suit all needs.
We have recently invested over £150,000 in modernising our Psychology facilities to equip students with cutting-edge skills and experience. The department offers a BPS computer lab with specialised software, including SPSS, Nvivo, MATLAB, and e-Prime, enabling students to conduct advanced data analysis, qualitative research, and experimental simulations.
Moreover, students have access to a wide range of online research facilities, including QuestionPro and Gorilla, which provide valuable tools for conducting surveys, experiments, and data collection remotely. These resources, combined with state-of-the-art labs, create an environment that fosters innovation and excellence in psychology, empowering students to engage in high-quality research and explore new frontiers in studying human behaviour and cognition.
We also have a lab equipped for eye-tracking experiments. The labs are perfect for controlling environmental variables and are used by students for research projects.
Our staff are leading experts in the field
From a student’s point of view, who better to learn from than someone who has held positions in the psychology sector – roles you may one day have. That’s why it’s important to us that our psychology staff have actual professional experience to call upon. Our academics have vital industry experiences such as working for HM Prison Service, Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust and Birmingham Children's Hospital.
During your psychology degree, you will be taught by experts like Dr. Aris Terzopoulis. Dr. Terzopoulis is a dedicated teacher and actively engages in research and knowledge exchange with non-academics and communities. His commitment showcases his desire to create a positive impact beyond teaching boundaries, providing a unique learning experience you won't find anywhere else.
On the topic of research, our staff are research active, meaning you will benefit from research-informed teaching and learning activities. You will be allowed to learn from and participate in several research projects throughout the year, and we hold regular academic research seminars, which are recorded for our online students.
Location
Alongside on-campus facilities, it is also worth considering a university's geographic location for more than one reason. Firstly, looking for any information the university offers about its connections to local organisations is helpful. The College of Psychology has good relations with organisations, right on our doorstep, from local police services to social outreach programmes – resulting in placement and job opportunities for students and insightful visits and talks from industry experts who visit the University to meet with students.
Opportunities
You could embark on a year-long professional placement as part of your degree course. Past placements have seen our students work with organisations such as the NHS, West Midlands Police, HM Prisons and Probation Services, local schools, and youth mentoring services around the city of Birmingham. On our courses you will gain a professional focus and real-world experience of psychology, ensuring you are equipped to make an immediate impact in your career.
