If you're wondering about taking the next step and applying for a course then we've got the help you need to make an application for a sport-related course.
A picture of you in our minds
Present the key information early on in your personal statement. It should give us a clear picture of you as an individual and tell us about your experiences, skills and interests you have as well as what positives or strengths you would bring to the course and the University.
More than academic qualifications
We are interested in your academic qualification but wider qualifications are also important so do note these in either your application or personal statement. For example, you might have qualifications in First Aid, coaching or instructing, mentoring or volunteering. Alternatively you may have other qualifications such as a Duke of Edinburgh Award, St. John’s Ambulance, Lifesaving award or similar. If you are in the process of completing any qualifications, state when you will complete them and what you hope to do with them. What have you learnt from these experiences and how they can support you as you move onto a sport-related degree course?
Participation and support
Although participation in sport and exercise is important, it’s not just about competing. Volunteering or participating in a supporting role is also important, for example assisting with a local sports club either coaching or instructing, organising or delivering after school clubs at a primary or secondary school, working at a summer school club, supporting your teacher or club coach in organising ‘sport taster sessions’ or organising schools teams or school sport festivals. If so ensure this is clearly noted in your personal statement and what you learnt from the experience.

Passion for your subject
Demonstrating your enthusiasm, interest and passion for sport and the sport courses is so important. This can be evidenced by providing information on the role(s) you’ve been involved in within sport and/or exercise. For example, if you participate in sport(s) at what activity do you participate in? At what level? How long have you been doing it? Are you part of a team or a club?
Be clear and concise
Overall be precise and concise in the information you provide and tailor it to the relevant sport course or courses you’re applying for. Write in a clear and coherent style which demonstrates your motivation, inspiration, passion and commitment to your subject. Remember that your personal statement is a more formal piece of writing so we're not expecting to see "I wanna b a sports therapist cos..." – after all, we'll be looking for academic essays from you as well as practical work. (It’s also a good idea to remember this if you need to email a course tutor or our admissions team too!)
