Many of you may remember Alexander Stadium as the iconic venue that hosted the unforgettable Commonwealth Games in the summer of 2022. But did you know that this historic stadium is now home to Birmingham City University’s (BCU) Sports and Exercise courses?
The Alexander Stadium in Birmingham was the proud host of the 2022 Commonwealth Games, marking a significant moment in the city’s sporting history. As the centrepiece of the Games, the stadium facilitated performances across athletics and para-sport events, with thousands of athletes from around the world competing for gold. In May 2020, the stadium underwent a £72million redevelopment The stadium was transformed into a world-class venue with upgraded facilities, creating a vibrant atmosphere for both spectators and participants, making it the biggest facility of its kind with an outstanding permanent capacity of 18,000.
The Games showcased Birmingham’s rich cultural diversity, unity, and passion for sports, leaving a legacy for the city and its residents. The success of the 2022 Commonwealth Games has cemented Alexander Stadium as a key sporting landmark, hosting future events and inspiring the next generation of athletes.
Since moving in, BCU has transformed the stadium into a hub of world-class learning, providing students with cutting-edge facilities and the opportunity to learn alongside professional athletes.

We’ve invested £5 million into developing the space in both the West and East stands for our specialist laboratories and bespoke learning spaces. The stadium houses an environmental chamber, biomechanics lab, Physiology labs alongside anti-gravity treadmills, all to ensure the best experiences for our students.

Alexander Stadium is also home to highly revered athletics club, Birchfield Harriers and the Midland Hurricanes Rugby League Club (formerly known as the Coventry Bears) and BCU is committed to ensure that Alexander Stadium remains a pillar of sport in Birmingham and beyond.
