Biomedical Science: My student journey

BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science student, Fatima Al-Musawi, has just started the third year of her degree. As she nears the end of her course, she looks back on her BCU experience so far.

Since starting BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science at BCU, I have valued all the experiences and opportunities that the course has provided me with. I have gained many memories, lifelong friendships and important skills that will support me as a graduate.

What I’ve learnt

While studying at BCU, I have learnt to believe in myself and in my capabilities. I learnt that with hard work, perseverance, and dedication, anything is possible. This was evident in my first and second year grades, as I was fortunate enough to achieve a high 2.1 in both years.

I was very lucky to be offered several student jobs such as Student Ambassador, Literacy Tutor and Aim Higher Mentor. In these roles I have enhanced many important skills which include teamwork, communication, and leadership.

The Biomedical Science course is well designed to offer career advice and support to all students. Throughout the course, we have had guest lectures from different professions to guide us on making our career choices post-graduation. A degree in Biomedical Science will equip you with all the relevant and necessary skills required to be successful in a career such as medicine, teaching, research, industry and many more.

Why BCU?

I chose Biomedical Science at BCU due to the supportive assessment structure and methods that the course team has put in place. The design of the assessment structure has supported me to achieve, succeed and go beyond. We are assessed on a semester by semester basis, meaning that any modules you study in semester 1 you will not be assessed on in semester 2, although the knowledge is applied retrospectively. We have a variety of assessment methods that include MCQ exams, lab reports, posters, and presentations.

Another reason why I have chosen to study Biomedical Science at BCU is because we are taught by a group of very supportive and knowledgeable academics. If you are considering Biomedical Science at BCU, I would definitely advise you to go for it because it has been the best opportunity of my life and it may be yours too.

Where next?

Following the completion of a very successful two years at BCU, and learning about a wide range of careers, I have found my passion is for teaching. I have applied for PGCE Biology, and I can’t wait to start my next chapter. Thank you BCU for everything.
