Nicki’s teaching focus is on supporting the transition of students into higher education, embedding employability and professional skills throughout the curriculum. She leads the Department’s student recruitment and induction activities and runs a first year contextual module taken by all new students. She also teaches planning sessions covering environmental assessment, sustainability appraisal and waterways management.

Nicki’s research interests are around the links between values and decision making for spatial planning. She has a particular interest in the changing uses and management of urban waterways – the focus of her ongoing PhD in Inland Waterways Policy & Evidence.
Recent research involvement explored the management of contested values within a Rural Economy and Land Use (RELU) project on Managing Environmental Change at the Rural Urban Fringe as well as consultancy work for the Inland Waterways Association. She is part of the leadership team for the Water, Environment & Communities research group.
