Prior to studying at university, Bruce Philp worked in the pharmaceutical industry. In 1990 he gained a BA Economics from Manchester Metropolitan University, and subsequently achieved an MA and PhD from the University of Manchester.

Dr Philp's PhD applied the techniques of game theory to the study work time and distribution. His research continues to contribute in this area, as well as examining business and societal sustainability, productivity and distribution of income.

Prior to joining Birmingham City University, Bruce worked as a Lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University (1991-1999), and as a Senior Lecturer then Principal Lecturer at Nottingham Trent University (1999-2015). At Nottingham Business School he was the Coordinator of the Work and Employment Research Group. He is presently Head of the Graduate School of Management, having previously been Acting Head of the Business School, Research Director and a departmental head.

He has been an Associate Editor for Economic Issues, 2007-2013, and is presently a member of the ESRC peer-review college. He has secured two ESRC grants and three Innovate UK KTPs, as supervisor and academic lead. He has collaborated with companies including Malthouse Engineering, Evac+Chair International and FAST. In 2021-23 he was the BCU lead on Phase 3 of the Enterprise for Success Project, funded through the Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership (GBSLEP) and the ERDF.
