Professor Javed Hussain is Professor of Entrepreneurial Finance at Birmingham City University where he currently leads the Accounting and Finance Group. Professor Hussain completed his PhD (1996) and M. Soc. Sci (1987) in Money, Banking and Finance from the University of Birmingham and a first degree in Economics, BA (Hons) From Birmingham Polytechnic (1985).
Currently, Professor Hussain supervises a number of PhDs in the areas of corporate, micro and small business finance. He also takes postgraduate courses on Research Methods and International Financial Strategy.
Prior to joining Birmingham City University Professor Hussain held posts in finance within public and private sector organisations. He was financial analyst with the Forward Trust Group (now a subsidiary of HSBC bank) and prior to that he worked for Birmingham City Council. He has collaborated on a number of research projects funded by public sector clients. He has published extensively on issues of bank finance for SMEs with a particular focus on ethnic firms and has co-authored papers and chapters in a number of journals and books. He is currently co-editing Reading in Entrepreneurial Finance book with Dr Jonathan Scott. Furthermore, he is conducting collaborative research on differences in entrepreneurship and SME financing between developed and developing countries. In particular, considering the issues of SMEs within the Malaysian context.
Professor Hussain regularly presents papers at national and international conferences, engages in research with colleagues from a number of other UK institutions, Professor Paul Mosley on micro finance; Dr. Paul Stuart, University of West of Scotland, on presence of venture capital amongst ethnic minorities and Dr. Jonathan Scott, Teesside University on entrepreneurship. He is a peer referee for a number of international journal publications.
