Love Alfred

Love Alfred joined the Birmingham City University (BCU) as a Lecturer in Law in 2023. Love's research and teaching interests include international environmental law and sustainability, energy justice and transition, social and climate justice, natural resources, and the theoretical foundations of public law.

Prior to her current appointment, she had served as a Teaching Associate at the University of Birmingham (UoB) for over two years where she taught Public Law and Environmental Law. She currently teaches Constitutional and Administrative Law, and Legal Professionalism, Skills, and Attributes at BCU. Love is an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA).

Love is at the viva stage of her PhD programme at UoB. Her research focuses on reimagining energy justice (EJ) for a sustainable transition in Sub-Saharan African (SSA) contexts. Her doctoral work, which interrogates issues with energy access and security in developing countries, as well as the impact of EJ on the current energy transition, was funded by the Niger Delta Development Commission. The research raises questions about how well the core principles of EJ framework define a ‘just’ energy transition and systems for SSA developing contexts.

Before starting her PhD at UoB, Love served as a State Counsel in the Civil Litigation Department of the Ministry of Justice of the Akwa Ibom State Government of Nigeria, following her qualification as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria in 2013. She has also served as the Legislative Counsel, Legal Researcher, and Special Adviser to the Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly (7th Assembly).

Love earned a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from the University of Uyo, Nigeria in 2012, a Bar Qualifying Certificate from the Nigerian Law School in 2013 and a Master of Laws (LLM) degree from the UoB in 2016.
