A HeadStart into employment

The funded programme, titled HeadStart, has been designed to provide students on the course with dedicated support from staff and vital experience that will better prepare them for graduate-level employment.

HeadStart has seen some considerable work and effort put in by the BLSS Careers+ team, who have targeted students with little or no current work experience in order to provide them with valuable experience and improve their confidence.

“The BLSS Faculty are enormously proud of its students and recognises how much they have to offer graduate-level employment,” says Lynn Fulford, Associate Dean for Student Learning Experience and Quality, who has been a key driver of the programme.

“HeadStart provides our Business Management students with the opportunity to work with our excellent staff so that they develop their skills, knowledge and experience in the graduate workplace.”

Placing students into new opportunities

HeadStart has been launched with a development day run by the BLSS Careers+ team.

The Development Day exposed students to a range of recruitment and selection processes that they might face when seeking graduate-level employment, as well as introducing topics that are important within the workplace.

Key activities included an individual presentation, a psychometric test, situational judgement test and a group activity, alongside a session on email etiquette and GDPR training.

All students who attended the Development Day have been placed in opportunities, taking on a variety of positions such as website content creator, employability administrator and project coordinator.

Comments from some of the students thus far indicate that the online interview and the Development Day has already helped them achieve further employment.

Dedicated support for each faculty

Each Faculty has a dedicated Careers+ team, available to support your students and to work with you to develop and deliver careers, placements and employability related activities.

The team works with each Faculty to identify and prioritise courses and students who will gain most benefit from targeted support.
