David worked for Marconi Electronic Devices Ltd (MEDL) as an integrated Design Engineer before obtaining his first degree in Electronic Engineering in 1989 at Keele university before returning to work at MEDL. He returned to Keele to commence on an MSc in Optical Data Recording in which he obtained a distinction before completing a PhD in Electronics (photonics). During this time he was Warden of Horwood hall of residence as well as an assistant lecturer where he taught all things electronic from audio to biomedical. David became involved with the RFID group and delivered workshops in the USA as well as at home and in Europe. He was also involved with consultancy for the International Post Corporation which saw him travel all over Europe for several years.
In 1997 he move to Birmingham and joined BCU as a lecturer. David contributed to the Electronics programme and soon became Assistant Centre Manager and then Centre Manager for the Centre of Electronics and Software having been a Course Director for multiple courses. In 2009 he became Deputy Head of School for Computing, Telecommunications and Networks until 2015. He then had the position of Director of Recruitment, then Director of Operations for the School of Computing and Digital Technology and more recently Director of International Operations.
David’s work within the School’s portfolio and BCU regulations means he has a good understanding of all things to do with their courses and is also Deputy Chair of the Schools many exam boards.
His keen interest in teaching focused on his musical interests in audio electronics and his recent direction in his research on composite materials for brasswind instruments.
Lately, David has published on composite trumpets and was been awarded STEAM development funding in conjunction with the Royal Conservatoire to investigate 3D modelling of period instruments. He has been a member of the programme committee for EVA (Electronics, Visualisation and the Arts) London conferences since 2018 to this day which he enjoys.
In his spare time David enjoys music playing the trumpet in orchestras and wind bands.
