Overview
The course focuses on the theoretical aspect of immunisations and vaccinations in line with PHE National Minimum Standards and Core Curriculum for Immunisation Training for Registered Healthcare Practitioners (2018).
To ensure the ongoing delivery of a high quality, safe and effective immunisation programme that achieves high uptake, it is important that all practitioners involved in immunisation have a comprehensive level of knowledge and are confident in immunisation policy and procedures. This course aims to develop knowledge and capabilities within immunisations.

Who would benefit?
This course is intended for Health Practitioners new to their area requiring an update, Health Practitioners who give advice, and Health Practitioners who wish to update on the topics covered in the foundation course.
This course focuses on the theoretical aspects of immunisations and vaccinations. The practice of administration technique is supported by your employer.
If you are a new practitioner or beginning to administer immunisations, you are advised to obtain a mentor in practice. This is in line with the recommendations made in the UK Government’s Immunisation training standards for healthcare practitioners.

In this unit, you'll explore national bodies and agencies shaping vaccine policies, and delve into the Department of Health's seminal "Green Book" as a guiding document for vaccination programs. Familiarise yourself with the UK vaccination schedules to gain strategies for addressing incomplete or uncertain vaccination histories in patients.

In this unit you will discover how vaccines work and the body’s immune response to vaccinations.

Communicating with patients, parents and carers
This unit considers the crucial aspect of engaging in conversations with patients, parents, and carers regarding immunisation, addressing the factors contributing to vaccine hesitancy. Effective communication is vital in facilitating informed consent for immunisation, necessitating the provision of adequate information by healthcare professionals. Discover valuable insights on how to conduct impactful immunisation discussions.

Vaccine preventable diseases
In this unit, we'll explore commonly used vaccines and the diseases they protect against. Those who immunise or advise about immunisation should understand the reasons behind recommended immunisations, including disease characteristics, and the risks and benefits associated with each vaccine.

Legal aspects
This section will provide information on the legal aspects of giving vaccines including the process of consent, the requirements of record keeping, and different types of medical orders you might encounter (e.g. prescriptions, patient specific direction, etc).

Vaccine storage and administration
In this unit, we will discuss the fundamentals of vaccination storage, focusing on the importance of the cold chain. We will also provide guidance on selecting appropriate injection sites and needle sizes based on specific circumstances.
