Short course
Introduction to Industrial Internet of Things Systems
Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is the underpinning infrastructure of factories of the future; aimed at developing intelligent systems that accelerate and automate manufacturing processes with a high level of efficiency and accuracy and noticeably low cost.
Overview
IIoT is a key enabler for generating industrial big data on a machine’s operation, enabling better decision making for organisations. IIoT platforms are essential for creating innovative applications that enhance manufacturing processes, improve visibility, and increase productivity. Many companies are now investing in IIoT platforms to increase their visibility, productivity levels and empowering staff to work smarter.
This course provides you with an opportunity to gain experience and to reflect on the skills of IIoT within a global context.
Learning Outcomes
Appraise the fundamental concepts, terminologies, and capabilities of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and Smart Factory.
Demonstrate understanding of different IIoT connectivity solutions, sensors technologies, computing devices, tools and platforms involved in smart manufacturing systems.
Describe how data collection, management, and visualisation processes are used to support smart manufacturing and increased productivity (e.g. via predictive maintenance).
WHO WOULD BENEFIT?
This course has been designed to support working professionals with an interest in Industrial Internet of Things and smart manufacturing. Whether you’re looking to find a career in this field, or you need to learn more about implementing it in your own business or factory, this course introduces fundamental concepts and encourages reflection on how to apply these in a real-world scenario.
COURSE IN DEPTH
This course introduces the foundational concepts of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) which underpins smart manufacturing. We will explore embedded computing devices, sensing technologies, communication protocols, and platforms – and how all of these power cutting-edge solutions. The course is delivered in a self-paced mode with interactive and engaging learning materials to help you reflect on how you can apply your new knowledge to your own real-world solutions. This delivery mode also gives you the flexibility to take control of your learning and study in your own space and at your own pace.
WHAT IS INCLUDED?
-
Unit 1: Overview and Business Value
We will introduce fundamental concepts and terminologies in relation to Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). We will also describe how the Internet of Things has evolved overtime. And finally, we will identify digitisation and digitalisation in the Digital Transformation process.
-
Unit 2: IIoT Ecosystem Framework
We will discuss the manufacturing technology required for IIoT and the importance of the convergence of Information Technologies and Operation Technologies. We will describe a variety of IIoT architecture and frameworks. We will identify IIoT fundamental concepts, terminologies and standards. We will highlight IIoT transformation considerations in order to analyse which solutions best apply to your situation.
-
Unit 3: IIoT Sensors and Messaging Protocols
We will explain what transducers are and identify some examples of sensors and actuators. We will describe how sensors interact via multiuser communication/chat. We will identify how to embed communication protocols. We will define and provide examples of serial communications. We will explore different industrial messaging protocols.
-
Unit 4: IIoT Connectivity Protocols
We will examine a high-level view of Smart Factory Network Topologies. We will provide examples of Connectivity Protocols in IIoT. We will investigate examples of short, medium, and long-range Communication Protocols and situations they might be used within. We will identify key interoperability standards. We will evaluate IoT connectivity solutions based on bandwidth and range parameters.
-
Unit 5: IIoT Back-end Systems
We will distinguish between IIoT Edge and Cloud infrastructure for data collection and management. We will describe what IIoT Platforms are and explain their benefits as well as exploring the world of data visualisation.
