Dr Fawaz Annaz had a long international career in Mechatronics Engineering, where has taught and conducted research in many countries including the UK, Singapore, Japan, Malaysia and Brunei.

In 1987 he received a BSc in Electrical and Electronic engineering from the University of East London, with a main theme of research in ‘Electromagnetic Vehicle Levitation Control’.

In 1989 he received an MSc in Engineering of Dynamic Systems, where he conducted research on the development and control of ‘Helical and Planar Induction Actuators’.

In 1996, he received a PhD in Avionics that addressed ‘Architectures Consolidation and Monitoring Methods in High Integrity Multi-Lane Smart Electric Actuators’. The research addressed the development of actuation architectures that were designed to move control surfaces similar to that of an aileron on the Sea-Harrier. This activity continued to grow under the international banners of High Integrity System Laboratory.

Dr Fawaz Annaz then joined the Mechanical Engineering Laboratory (Japan-Tsukuba) as a Research Fellow to the bioengineering and robotics engineering departments. In collaboration with Tsukuba and Ibaraki Universities he investigated:

  • Vibration Control (VC) and its application to Multi-hinged (Gantry) & Mass-spring (linear/rotary) chained systems.
  • VC to Active Magnetic Bearing Systems.
  • Artificial Heart (AH) Development: efficiency improvement and Impeller stability analysis

In subsequent years, he further developed prior expertise and initiated novel multidisciplinary research activities that satisfied personal interests and addressed stimulating engineering problems in:

High Integrity Smart Actuation System
Robotics and Haptics:
  • New Generation Industrial Robots
  • Unmanned Ground Vehicles
  • Unmanned Aerial Vehicles
  • Swarm UAVs
Education:
  • Understanding Speech, its production and Perception
  • Phoneme Signatures Development
  • Mechatronics in Gerontology

Over the years, he has led several research groups, including the High Integrity System Laboratory in Japan and Malaysia, and the Mechatronics Group in Malaysia. He has also acted as a principal investigator and co-investigator to several international internal and external projects (including the Ministry of Education in Japan).

He has also supervised several undergraduate and postgraduate students (at the MSc and PhD Levels). His efforts resulted in:

  • a book
  • book chapters
  • over 50 peer-reviewed publications
  • two international patent applications
  • one granted European Patent, which he is planning on its development and commercialisation.

As an academic, he has taught and developed several Electrical, Electronic, and Mechatronics Engineering, some of which include:

  • Control Systems
  • Advanced Control
  • Embedded Systems
  • Robotics, Dynamics & Control
  • Mechatronics Design
  • Mechatronics Laboratory

Dr Annaz has also held several administrative roles including:

  • Director of Mechatronics
  • Professor of Mechatronics, Instrumentations and Control
  • Director of Innovative Engineering
