About Us

English is located in the Curzon Building in Birmingham City Centre, along with the University's main library and Students' Union. We are well positioned to take advantage of everything Birmingham has to offer, including easy access to the Library of Birmingham and the Shakespearean collections at Stratford-upon-Avon.

A range of courses

We offer a very flexible range of undergraduate courses in Language, Literature, Creative Writing and Journalism. Our teaching staff are published authors and leading researchers. We offer MAs in Linguistics, Literature or Creative Writing and further PhD options for postgraduate study, including access to bursaries to support further study.

Impressive research

Our research has grown exponentially in recent years. We publish at the highest levels, have access to unique resources and have an impressive track record of securing research funding and engaging with businesses and arts organisations. Our Research and Development Unit for English Studies and Institute for Creative and Critical Writing further enhance this activity.

How you learn

Our courses combine traditional teaching and learning approaches with innovative, multi-platform learning support, grounded in a student-partnership model which will encourage engagement beyond the scope of the course and ensure that you develop key transferable skills to enhance your employment. The modules you study will involve critical analysis, investigative skills and imaginative thinking.
