Damienne Clarke

Damienne gained her undergraduate degree from the University of Liverpool and then completed a PGCE in Primary Education at the University of Durham.

Prior to joining Birmingham City University in September 2013, Damienne’s background was in Primary Education and she worked in six primary schools over a twenty three year period.

After qualifying in 1990, Damienne taught for ten years in two primary schools in the North East where she undertook a variety of subject and curriculum leadership roles (including history, music and curriculum co-ordinator). In 2000 Damienne relocated to Leicestershire where she taught for a further thirteen years.

As a class teacher, Damienne was Key Stage 2 based, predominately in Year 6. She also taught Music and French in Foundation Stage and KS1 for a number of years.

During her time in Leicestershire, Damienne undertook many varied teaching and leadership roles, including Assistant Head Teacher, then Deputy Head Teacher, of a large primary school in Loughborough and Acting Head Teacher of a smaller Leicestershire primary school. She has been an active member of the Governing Bodies of three primary schools.

Damienne’s last role before joining BCU was as Head Teacher of a Leicestershire primary school (August 2010 to August 2013).

Damienne’s role at BCU is Senior Lecturer in Primary Education. She teaches Primary History and Professional Studies on both the BA Hons Primary Education with QTS and PGCE Primary and Early Years courses. She is also Deputy Course Leader for the PGCE Primary and Early Years course.

Damienne supports students across both courses whilst they are in schools.

Damienne is a member of the Historical Association, Primary History Journal’s editorial board and is co-secretary for the Midland’s History Forum.
