Shannon completed her BA (Hons) in Early Childhood Education Studies at Birmingham City University in 2014. Her studies focused on understanding and meeting the needs of the youngest children, with a focus on play, pedagogy and theory.

While studying for her degree, Shannon gained Early Years Professional Status, her training funded by Best Practice Network. Her focus was on leadership in the early years and being an agent of change. Much of Shannon’s work while training was inspired by her undergraduate research project, which focused on leadership roles in early years settings.

After completing her undergraduate degree, Shannon was awarded a fully-funded doctoral researcher position at Birmingham City University. Taking on the role of a Graduate Researcher and Teaching Assistant, Shannon’s thesis focused on the use of touchscreen technology in early years settings, seeking to determine the affordances of touch-enabled devices when used with pre-school children. Her research led to the development of a new method of gaining consent when researching with young children, and Shannon has also developed a new pedagogical framework to support the implementation of touchscreen devices into practice.

Shannon currently works in the Department of Childhood, Youth and Community as a Senior Lecturer and is the Course Leader on the Early Childhood Studies programme. Drawing on her background, Shannon teaches modules on research methods and ethics when researching with young children, social justice and inclusion, exploring the concept of a healthy child and the importance of the early years environment. Shannon is also the Course Leader on the DipHE Pre-School Education (Dual Award) programme, in partnership with the Guangdong Teachers College of Foreign Language and Arts in China. Alongside teaching, Shannon continues to explore the use of technology in the early years through a range of research projects and is working on publishing key aspects from her thesis.
