Marianna has worked as a midwife in a delivery suite for 14 years. For the first half of her working life, she was based in Italy, the country of her birth. However, she chose to leave Italy as she felt undervalued, and that there were a lack of opportunities for professional growth.
Here in the UK, Marianna had the chance to experience a different level of independence in her midwifery role, as well as the opportunity to achieve more academic goals. She has completed a level 7 Master Degree (completing the newborn examination NIPE course) and has started (but not yet completed) a PhD, as her focus of interest is research.
She had the chance to work for a private institute of research for almost two years, which was a great opportunity to develop more knowledge and skills in terms of research, but also gave her a love for teaching.
As an Assistant Lecturer, Marianna enjoys sharing her years of clinical experience and passion for research. She feels an evidence base approach is crucial to delivering safe care, and the ability to criticise a strategy that comes from a single opinion without a proper evaluation of risks and benefits is important.
It is not an easy topic to get students engaged with but Marianna does her best to share her enthusiasm.
