Dr Oamen joined Birmingham City University (BCU) in 2022 from the University of Northampton where he was a full-time Lecturer in Law. He worked previously as a Law Teaching Associate at the University of Birmingham, Visiting Lecturer in Law at BCU, Applied Law Lecturer at Warwickshire College Group (Royal Leamington Spa College), and Lecturer in Law at Ambrose Alli University, Nigeria.

Philip is the Associate Course Director of the LLM Programme at BCU. His teaching interests are in Human Rights and Business-related Law modules. He currently teaches on the LLB and LLM programmes where he has taught the United Nations Law and Practice, Human Rights in the Wider World, Business Law and Contract Law modules.

Philip is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). He is a recipient of the University of Birmingham’s Horizon Award and Academic Practice Certificate. At the BCU’s 2023 Knowledge Exchange Awards, Philip was the recipient of BCU's 'Highly Commended' Award for the 'Most Impactful Consultancy Project', with respect to his 'Rights of Older Persons in Africa' research and knowledge exchange project. The United Nations has cited  his Evidence Submission to inform its report on older persons in the context of climate change-induced disasters. Philip has appeared on an international television station (Channels TV) to promote the realisation of the rights of older persons.

Philip is a licensed Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria. He gained extensive law practice experience before becoming an academic. He draws on this experience to facilitate a practice-based learning experience for his students.
