This seminar is hosted by the Centre for Human Rights and the School of Law Research Seminar Series. Our series offers exciting insights into ongoing research projects within the law school and conducted by our external research partners. We often feature work from our research centres (the Centre for American Legal Studies, the Centre for Human Rights, the Centre for Science, Law and Policy, and the International Business Law Research Group). Our work is often transdisciplinary, dealing with law's relationship with broadly defined social justice, policy-making, science and much more. Join us for invigorating discussion!

This research discussion will be facilitated by Dr Amna Nazir, Ms Catie Harvey, Mr Elshareef Ali. Dr Nazir is a Senior Lecturer in Law, Associate Director of the Centre for Human Rights, and Co-Director of the LLM International Human Rights. Her research focuses on Islamic law and the UN’s Universal Periodic Review mechanism. Mr Ali is the Founder and Director of the Sudanese Human Rights Initiative (SHRI) based in Khartoum, Sudan. SHRI is a nongovernmental Sudanese organization established in 2008, in response to human rights violations committed by the state. Ms Harvey is the UPR Lead for SHRI and has been extensively involved in human rights campaigns globally.

In this session, the presenters will facilitate the following discussion:

Special Session - Safeguarding Human Rights in Sudan: The UPR and Beyond

This research discussion will provide a forum to discuss and engage with efforts to promote and protect human rights in Sudan. This will be based on BCUCHR and SHRI’s joint submission to Sudan’s third UPR which recently took place on 9 February 2022. The submission focused on 3 main themes: (1) unlawful detention and torture; (2) freedom of religion or belief; and, (3) impunity for state actors. During the session, Dr Nazir will provide an overview to the project and work carried out to date and Ms Harvey and Mr Ali will discuss SHRI’s work and the ongoing advocacy it is engaged with, especially in light of the recent October military coup which has plunged the country into turmoil and triggered countless protests.
