Inspiring neurodiverse student scoops prestigious design award

Interior Architecture and Design student Elsie Gribbon has been heralded as a “neurodiversity champion” using her Autism as an advantage to take home top prize in a national competition.
Elsie recently won the 2023 Women in Property (WIP) National Student award, impressing the competition’s judging panel with her “professional, eloquent, authentic and empathetic approach” displayed in her spatial design project.
More than 100 students entered the WIP awards programme in 2023, but Elsie’s passion for the built environment shone through and secured her first prize.
Elsie’s course tutor at BCU Alexandra King, Lecturer in Interior Architecture and Design, believes her “comprehensive understanding of contemporary issues relating to diversity, inclusion and sustainability within the construction industry” helped pave the way to her success.
This year’s WIP National student Awards saw candidates face a judging panel regionally then nationally, where they were assessed on their personal skills, professional potential, understanding of the industry and challenged on topical industry issues.
As well as a shiny trophy deserving of any mantelpiece, Elsie also received a cheque for £1000 and membership to the Women in Property organisation where she can access the organisation’s acclaimed mentoring scheme.
