Students on Leading Engineering Endeavours module

The College of Engineering has delivered a Science Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths (STEAM) module entitled Leading Engineering Endeavours for the fourth consecutive year.

The module involves Level 5 Engineering students, across automotive, mechanical, electronic, and manufacturing courses, working closely with water welfare charity The Rivers Trust on a green engineering project.

Working in teams, students are given a challenge of educating schoolchildren, undergraduates and teachers about the challenges of water welfare.

The module requires students to invent a nature-based, green engineering solution tackling polution in 12 weeks. As part of the module, students meet regularly with the Rivers Trust team: Technical Director Dave Johnson, Senior Project Manager Dr Ukwuori Fadayiro and Technical Manager Paul Hulme who coach and provide feedback.

They are also required to make a video about their project and present it in a trade fair environment at Innovation Fest on Tuesday 20 May.

David Johnson said: "Working with the students on the Engineering Endeavours module is great for The Rivers Trust. We can see the students gaining the skills that employers want and it’s a lot of fun too – thanks for involving us."

Bernice Muneriro said: "Presenting to The River’s Trust showed that Engineering isn’t just about technical aspects; it’s about thinking like future business leaders and find engaging ways to educate people and communicate the value of nature-based solutions."

Visiting Lecturer in Engineering Mark Regan said: "Inevitably, when our students are out in the real world, employers will ask them about working with real clients. A past student posted on LinkedIn recently that the Leading Engineering Endeavours module was the subject of all her jobs interviews. She now has a career at Jaguar Land Rover. The module is great fun, challenging and makes a significant contribution to our students' employability."
