Birmingham City University moves teaching online until mid-February, extends no detriment policy

UNIVERSITY NEWS LAST UPDATED : 06 JANUARY 2021

In line with Government guidance and the national lockdown rules, Birmingham City University will begin online teaching when our standard term starts on 25 January. This will initially last until 19 February.

There are a small number of exceptions where face to face teaching has been permitted by the Government, specifically where students are studying on future critical worker courses – healthcare, education and social work.

Many of these courses have already returned following the Christmas break and face-to-face teaching continues. This approach will be reviewed as the situation develops and in line with any further Government guidance.

A University spokesperson said, “The safety of our students, staff and wider community continues to be of paramount importance to us. A number of University buildings remain open, providing essential services to students who do not have a safe space to study elsewhere, who need to access mental health support, who remain in term-time accommodation, or for international students already in the UK to ensure these groups have their specific needs met during this challenging period.

"We have asked students who do not fall into one of these categories to remain at home during the current lockdown in line with current legislation and all staff whose presence on campus is not essential will also work from home.

"The University’s wellbeing team continues to offer counselling and support online and by telephone to all students whenever needed.

“Birmingham City University recognises that the pandemic will impact on our students and their studies. Because of this we have extended the no detriment policy which we put in place last summer, to ensure students’ marks are not adversely affected by this move to online studying.

“We are constantly monitoring and reviewing all aspects of the student and staff experience during this time, and thank our University community for their ongoing understanding and commitment.”
