Birmingham City University’s expertise in AI, cyber security, data and 5G has helped secure significant funding for its College of Computing as part of a £14m healthcare technology programme across the region.
The West Midlands Health Tech Innovation Accelerator (WMHTIA) will seek to address the challenges of bringing new medical and healthcare technologies into the UK market.
It is hoped that the WMHTIA will spark innovation, growth and investment by bolstering the region’s research and development capability.
Associate Professor Junaid Arshad will lead the BCU project with co-investigator Associate Professor De Mi, with both bringing considerable expertise and knowledge to the programme.
“The BCU team will work to supercharge the region’s ability to accelerate new health and medical technologies, aiding the rapid validation of patient-centric products for deployment in a regional and international context," said Associate Professor Mi.
Professor Adel Aneiba, Head of the College of Computing at BCU, added: “It is exciting to see our growing excellence in 5G, AI and digital technologies recognised as integral to delivering the West Midlands Plan for Growth. The college has extensive co-creation links between startups, corporates, and other stakeholders in the healthcare ecosystem.”
Dr Umar Daraz, Director of Innovation and University strategic lead for the Med Tec Innovation Accelerator at BCU, said: “Its fantastic opportunity to connect innovations via our strategic partnerships with the NHS. We are incredibly proud to be working closely with our partners across the West Midlands on such an exciting research and innovation project.”
