UNIVERSITY NEWS LAST UPDATED : 11 JULY
Birmingham City Women have been put through their paces at Birmingham City University’s (BCU) new sport and exercise science facilities at Alexander Stadium.
Players took part in a number of strength tests conducted by BCU staff and students, who are now based at the iconic Commonwealth Games venue.
“The facilities bring quality, accessibility, knowledge and expertise from industry professionals,” said Lewis Gordon, Lead Physical Performance Coach at Birmingham City.
“It’s important the football club establishes relationships with universities in the surrounding areas as it helps with pre-season testing and our ability to monitor players.”
Players were able to use equipment like the isokinetic dynamometer, which evaluates strength, endurance, power and range of motion in all major joints and muscles.
Testing also allowed BCU students to gain valuable experience working with elite athletes.
“With Birmingham City right on our doorstep, this was a perfect opportunity for us,” said lecturer Craig Perrin. “We all benefit from putting our classroom learning into practice.”
Among the Blues players being tested ahead of the new Barclays Women’s Championship season was 18-year-old forward Ava Baker.
“It means a lot to know that experts care and want to help improve our performance over the season,” she said. “The test will give us a great baseline for the season ahead.”
The East and West stands at Alexander Stadium have been adapted to house a range of specialist equipment and teaching facilities that will be used by up 1,200 BCU students.
The venue will provide the perfect setting for a new generation of sports therapists, sports scientists, nutritionists, sports coaches, and other sports professionals.
