Academics at Birmingham City University have outlined the potential impact Brexit negotiations will have on Britain’s future relationship with the EU.
Researchers and lecturers at the University’s Centre for Brexit Studies have produced an infographic detailing what the impact will be on Britain’s trade position depending on membership of the Single Market and the Customs Union.
The outline demonstrates the influence on EU decision making, the freedom to negotiate trade deals outside of the EU and the likely impact on public perception which may result from various scenarios.
The infographic comes as European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said of Brexit; 'we will always regret this. I think you will regret it as well soon if I might say,' during his state of the union speech in Strasbourg.
Professor Alex de Ruyter, Director of Birmingham City University’s Centre for Brexit Studies, said: “As negotiations continue with the EU, choices will have to be made regarding the nature of our future trading relationship.
“Our largest market remains the EU, so any move away from the Single Market would require us to be able to trade more with the rest of the world, if we are to secure “trade deals”. None of these are guaranteed and all scenarios come with a cost.”
