University News Last updated 15 August 2012
Anxious students who are looking to start a University course this September are being urged not to panic and to ‘keep calm and carry on to Clearing’ by Birmingham City University.
A team of specially trained staff will be on hand from 8am tomorrow (16th August) to guide students through their options once they receive their A Level results.
Those who can't wait to call the dedicated hotline can access advice immediately by visiting our Clearing site, which has just launched a series of videos featuring staff and students who are sharing their advice about the Clearing process. The BCU Clearing Guide is also a lead feature on the Guardian's own Clearing website and can be found on a number of independent advice websites.
Before calling Birmingham City University’s Clearing hotline on 0121 331 6777 prospective students are advised to visit the UCAS website and university website to find out what is available in Clearing, and to ensure that they have enough points to get onto the course of their choice.

"Don't panic" about Clearing
Lyn Holder, Head of Outreach and Enquiry Management at the University said: “Clearing is often an anxious time for students. Some may have achieved better results than they expected and others may not have achieved their predicted grades. Others might have missed the deadline for applying to University back in January and are now looking for a University place for this autumn.
"Whatever the reason, our advice is don’t panic. Take time to research the right course and right university for you. Check web sites and don’t be afraid to ask for guidance.
Lyn Holder, Head of Outreach and Enquiry Management
“At Birmingham City University our aim is to make sure that you are aware of all your options, so that you can choose the course that is right for you. At the same time we place a high value on employability.
“Furthermore, I urge you to discuss your options with your family, tutor or careers adviser. Choosing what course to study is a pretty big decision, so it might help to talk it through with someone else.
“Remember only you can make the decision. Use other people as a sounding board but don’t be pushed into something you’re unsure about or don’t want to do. Your degree can influence not just the next few years but also your whole career so pick what’s right for you.”
The University is also offering a comprehensive portfolio of part-time courses through Clearing, including a range of undergraduate, postgraduate, professional and short courses, encompassing an equally diverse portfolio of subjects. Flexible study options help tailor courses to the specific needs of part-time students and often include evening and day release.
The Birmingham City University Clearing Hotline will be staffed from 8am to 8pm on Thursday 16th August, and on Friday 17th August with reduced opening hours at the weekend.
Clearing Open Day
The University will also be holding a dedicated Clearing Open Day on Saturday 18th August from 10am-2pm for which there is no need to register. For more information about this, visit
