Students at Birmingham City University will benefit from a range of international work and study placements throughout the 2023/24 academic year, after the university secured almost £1 million of funding through the UK Government's Turing scheme.

The funding will see BCU grow its international offering, with even more students able to access academic and work-based enrichment opportunities across 34 different countries*.

Parmila Murria, Director BCU's International Office, said: “This Turing funding will support our ambitious international strategic plan, aiming to create new opportunities for our students, and deliver a greater experience, academic outcomes and career prospects for them."

“We know that international opportunities help our students grow into better graduates. The funding awarded this year has increased 54% compared with last year, which means we can support our students to travel wider and further in the next academic year.”

Professor Peter Francis, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) at BCU, welcomed the funding, which will see the university significantly expand its programme of international opportunities for students.

“This is a fantastic outcome and is wonderful news for our students," he said. "The opportunities presented by overseas mobility, and the chances to grow and develop are unparalleled and will result in a truly transformational experience.”

The Turing Scheme is the UK government's funding programme for international student opportunities in education and training across the world. It provides support for studying and working abroad, and once-in-a-lifetime opportunities for students to develop their personal and professional skills.

*Countries where BCU students can study and work in the 2023/34 academic year include: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brunei, Canada, Costa Rica, Cyprus, Denmark, Fiji, Finland, France, Germany, Ghana, Greece, Honk Kong, India, Indonesia, Italy, Lithuania, Malaysia, Mauritius, Nepal, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Thailand, UAE, USA and Vietnam.
