Birmingham students tell Prince Charles bosses should get on their bikes

UNIVERSITY NEWS LAST UPDATED : 10 SEPTEMBER 2010

Birmingham City University graduates have been presenting to Prince Charles ideas about creating a greener future – and one idea is that employers should be ‘eco’ role models.

Seven recent University graduates attended the Birmingham leg of Start, the Prince’s countrywide tour to promote sustainable living, which was held at Millennium Point. They were given the responsibility of leading pupils from local schools in discussion groups, who later presented their ideas to the Prince.

One of the ideas presented to the Prince of Wales was that employers and heads of organisations should lead by example, such as when possible using public transport or cycling. Karan Padaliya, who has just finished studying for a BSc Computer Networks & Security was one of the forum leaders. He said: “Leading a group of young people was like being a tutor and I was really impressed with the ideas that the young people suggested. Along with a representative from industry I was leading a group of 15 and 16 year olds who debated issues in an intelligent manner. The group I led presented to the Prince the concept that the leader of an organisation should be an ‘eco’ role model to the others.”

His Royal Highness spent time viewing the numerous stalls on display at Millennium Point, including one that showcased Birmingham City University’s research into creating algae into biofuel, and spoke to Peter Rayson, Associate Dean in the Faculty of Technology, Engineering and the Environment.
