Millions of Muslims across the world have started observing fasting during Ramadan, by refraining from eating and drinking until sunset.
Dr Ayazullah Safi, a Senior Lecturer in Public Health at Birmingham City University (BCU), says it is important to look after your body and mind during the holy month.
“Many individuals are unaware of the effective steps they can take to enhance both their physical and mental wellbeing throughout this spiritually enriching month,” he says.
“Firstly, when you break your fast, the key is making sure you hydrate thoroughly with plenty of water, in order to replenish fluids lost during the day."
Often, foods consumed during the month can contain a high amount of oil and fats, therefore Dr Safi emphasises choosing healthier alternatives.
“When you eat, your meals should be a balance of carbohydrates, vegetables, proteins and fats." says Dr Safi.
“It is worth considering substituting deep fried samosas, pakoras and kebabs for foods that release energy slowly, such as oats or quinoa.
“Gradually implementing light exercises, like walking, jogging or Pilates, can offer significant health benefits.
“To maintain positive mental health and avoid stress, dedicate time for reflection and mindfulness. Where possible, schedule short power naps (20-30 minutes) to combat fatigue." he says.
It's important to inform people you work with about Ramadan as this will create an inclusive environment for those studying or working during the month.
“For students with exams during Ramadan, make sure you plan your meals and utilise your lunch breaks wisely, napping where possible.
“For those working through the month, it is worth informing colleagues and managers about your fasting schedule and perhaps considering flexible working arrangements.
“Remember that Ramadan is ultimately a time of mindfulness, community and gratitude.
“By approaching it with careful planning and attention to your holistic health, you can emerge from this sacred month feeling both spiritually fulfilled and physically well.”
As part of understanding Ramadan at BCU, there will be an event called 'Enlightening Ramadan: Understanding Ramadan and Fostering Wellbeing at BCU & beyond' events taking place at both City South and City Centre campuses.
