Research background
This research is part of Ana Rutter’s ongoing doctoral studies, currently titled 'hear //here || gathering the common place: towards a new understanding of affect and embodied encounter through constructing non-narrative sound sculpture'. The doctoral studies focus on gathering audio and images and using it to create environments.
Research aims
The project aims to explore how gathered materials can be combined and presented to create something new, making not a document of where they are from but a new space through which to understand their origin. The research also explores the relationship between art and its location as a venue for the meeting, decision making and encounters of its audience.
Research methods
Ana gathered materials, including audio, images and film while theatre company Stan’s Café where devising a new work ‘The Capital’ in 2018. Using the media she collected, Ana created an audio and film installation at the School of Art, entitled About (Facing away from the direction of travel).
Research outcomes
There have been a number of exhibition and presentation outcomes from the research, including a several of single screen iterations from the initial installation. The first iteration was for Warwick Arts Centre in February 2019 and also included a version with binaural audio. From the work there has also developed a conference presentation doing/thinking for Cracking the Established Order (Practice Based Research in Academia. 27th-28th June 2019 DeMontford University). This has now been developed into a paper and film for publication in June 2020 in The International Journal of Creative Media Research, Bath Spa University.
