Working as a Research Assistant on the OneEastside Digital Twin

One Eastside is a residential skyscraper currently under construction, set to be the tallest building in Birmingham at 509ft tall. This BCU research project aims to develop a pilot digital twin platform tailored for Court Collaboration, designed for immediate operation at One Eastside with the potential for future scalability.

Paige Wenbin Tien describes her journey to working as a research assistant on the OneEastside Digital Twin project here.

"As a Research Assistant in Digital Twin Development at Birmingham City University, I bring an academic and research background that bridges artificial intelligence, building technology, and environmental sustainability.

My journey began with a bachelor’s degree in architectural Environment Engineering and culminated in a PhD in Building Technology. Throughout my academic career, I have specialised in developing AI-driven energy management solutions, building energy modelling and performance analysis, with a focus on enhancing efficiency and environmental performance within the built environment.

My experience includes leading research on AI applications for building technology, aerothermal conditions across buildings, and energy and environmental assessments in energy systems and networks.

These experiences have provided me with valuable insights into the operational complexities and sustainability challenges facing the building sector. In my doctoral research, I developed an AI-powered energy management system that leverages deep learning and computer vision to optimise HVAC operations, achieving real-time performance adjustments based on occupancy detection.

My commitment to applying advanced digital technology to building environments aligns perfectly with my contribution to Birmingham City University’s Digital Twin Development for the One Eastside project.

I am excited to be part of the One Eastside project because of its potential to make a meaningful impact on building efficiency and sustainability. The opportunity to help create a dynamic, AI-integrated digital twin for Birmingham’s tallest skyscraper resonates deeply with my professional goals.

This project will allow me to expand my expertise in IoT and predictive analytics while contributing to sustainable urban development in a real-world context. Working alongside a dedicated team of experts on this innovative project is both a challenge and a privilege, aligning with my goal of advancing resilient, energy-efficient, and net-zero urban environments.

Through this project, I aim to tackle key issues in indoor air quality, energy consumption, and operational efficiency. By addressing these challenges holistically, I hope to contribute to the application of Digital Twins in buildings, helping to ensure that buildings meet future needs and environmental standards.

My aspiration is to support the development of digital twin solutions that not only improve operational performance but also serve as a foundation for future intelligent building innovations across the industry."
