Interrogating the culture of Craft

Jewellery, Fashion and Textiles hosts the Craft Cultures research centre, interrogating some of the most vibrant, diverse and ambitious research and professional practice activities in the subject areas.

Craft Cultures Research

The Craft Cultures research cluster provides a forum to explore the multidisciplinary characteristics of craft and its praxis. A core objective is to encourage research and understanding into all aspects of craftsmanship, from the creation of the object through the design, technology and material to the role of the object and how it engages and communicates with maker, wearer and audience.

Fashion Police

This unique research project supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund aims to enhance understanding of the role of police in society.

In collaboration with the West Midlands Police Museum, experts and students in fashion and computing at Birmingham City University focus on the evolution of police uniforms throughout history by creating an easily accessible, digitised collection and an exhibition with community engagement to gather diverse perspectives and to make it accessible for all.

Small Performances: Investigating the typographic punches of John Baskerville

This interdisciplinary research project will make a substantial contribution to the history of printing technology, whilst ensuring it is a living process that will continue into the future. At its heart is the exceptional collection of typographic punches designed, cut, and used at the Birmingham workshop of England's foremost printer, John Baskerville (1707-75).
