Project Aims

The aim of this research is to develop and implement a mortality risk score into acute medical ward in the UK.

The Computer Aided Risk Score (CARS) was developed to estimate the risk of death following emergency admission to medical wards. It uses routinely collected vital sights and blood test results. After development and validity testing we developed an implementation strategy by seeking the views of service providers and users and their carers on the potential value, unintended consequences and concerns. We piloted implementation with doctors in one NHS hospital in the north of England and found the score supported or challenged clinical judgement and decision making.  We identified barriers and facilitators to adoption and implementation support needs and recommendations for future development and progressive implementation.
