Yemisi holds a PhD in Media and Cultural Studies from Birmingham City University. She is a senior lecturer and Research Degrees Coordinator for the Birmingham Centre for Media and Cultural Research. Her research interests are in African Feminism(s) and media in Africa, particularly the intersections of Women's Rights and Media, and Media and the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Agenda. An award-winning journalist, she ran her news website, IQ4News, for four years. Her media work is Africa focused, covering stories from rape culture in Nigeria to an investigative and data story on the trafficking of young West African football hopefuls by fake agents. The latter won her the CNN African Journalist Award 2016 (sports reporting).
Yemisi is the co-founder of African Women in Media (AWiM), an international non-governmental organisation and annual conference, which aims to impact positively the way media functions in relation to African women. She hosts two podcast series, 'Her Media Diary', in which she interviews leading African women working in media industries, capturing their lived experiences and career journey.
In 2021, Yemisi was recognised as one of the 100 Most Influential African Women.
She has freelanced for publications, including the United Nations Africa Renewal magazine, and has several years' experience in communication management for charities.
