Philip served with the 1st Battalion Staffordshire Regiment, British Army 1974-75 before entering into accountancy. He worked for the District Audit Service of England and Wales gaining extensive and wide experience as an External Auditor. He then worked in local government and the NHS in a wide range of accounting roles and internal audit functions. At the same time he worked as a Management Consultant to several non-league football clubs undertaking ad-hoc and fraud investigations and prepared financial reports for the board of directors.

Work With Industry
Philip worked as a Senior Accounting Lecturer from 1987-96 at the West Midlands School of Accountancy teaching professional accounting students before transferring to Staffordshire University School to teach both professional and undergraduate and postgraduate students. During this period he also worked for the Open University Business School. He transferred to Keele University School of Economics and Management Studies in 2001-07 where he helped develop a new accounting degree and became the Course Director. He left to become principal lecturer in accounting at Coventry Business School having gained his PhD from Warwick Business School which was concerned with the development of accounting and its application in the English brewing industry within a Foucauldian disciplinary framework.
He is a member of the British Accounting and Finance Association and is currently developing links with the Centre for Enterprise and Citizenship at Northampton University and the Big Society Network that is researching the measurement of social earnings and impacts.
