Teaching and Learning in Digital Spaces in Nursing and Midwifery Education
Teaching and learning in digital spaces is not a new concept although the COVID-19 pandemic has meant that higher educational institutions (HEI) have had to rely so much on using digital spaces for teaching and learning from early 2020 to late 2021. Several virtual learning platforms developed over the decades are now being experimented in various institutions without proper understanding of how it works and its effect on teaching and learning. This transition cannot be without challenges especially in nursing and midwifery education where students needed to be taught care, compassion and practical skills among other things.
Aims
This study intends to explore teaching and learning in digital spaces in nursing and midwifery education to identify ways in which use of digital spaces can be used to improve outcomes for student nurses, student midwives, nurse educators and compliment face-to-face provision.
Method
A mixed method research design would be employed and the research would be carried out in three (3) phases. The first phase is a systematic scoping review to map out what is already known in the field within the context of UK HELs and nursing and Midwifery education, The second (2) phase is a quantitative study to analyse evidence of the effectiveness of teaching and learning in digital spaces in nursing and midwifery education such as student grades, learning outcomes and cost. The third (3) phase will be a qualitative study to explore the experiences of nursing students and lecturers on the subject in order to gain an in-depth understanding of the strength, weaknesses and appropriateness of teaching and learning in digital space.
Result/Expected Outcome
This study will provide opportunity to explore online platforms or simulation in delivering practice as well as building a digital or blended learning culture in nursing and midwifery education. It is anticipated that the findings from this study will feed into a faculty-wide commitment to developing leading edge pedagogies that would be used to improve learning outcomes in digital spaces.
