Music and new media: the emergence of an independent scene in Ecuador
Most of the studies around independent music and digital technologies are produced in hegemonic cultural centres. The way on which independent music emerges in peripheral regions is still something that lacks enough scholarly attention. Likewise, the opportunities and risks that emerging digital technologies pose to cultural expressions within peripheries is not something commonly explored. In this sense, this project is an ethnographic exploration of the Ecuadorian independent scene in a context on which music distribution and consumption is largely determined by digital technologies. Popular music spreads around the world but most of the contents with a global reach are produced in Anglo-Saxon geographies. Latin American music, especially contemporary forms of it, very rarely spread outside the region, some styles do not even get to transcend national borders.
This establishes very adverse circumstances to produce music and requires very specific independent efforts to make music scenes emerge. Internet based technologies, in many levels open possibilities to counterbalance these adverse conditions; however, the peripheral condition is still relevant. Thus, in this research I explore music and its contemporary technologies form a postcolonial perspective on which issues around globalization, cultural hybridity, and new media are position at the centre of the debate.
