Project Aims
The West Midlands Health Tech Innovation Accelerator (WMHTIA) is funded by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, in partnership with Innovate UK and the West Midlands Combined Authority.
The WMHTIA project brings together expertise from 20 partners representing academia, industry and NHS to deliver excellence and boost innovation in Healthtech within the West Midlands. It does so through a coherent programme of support across six dimensions i.e. diagnosis of need; definition of challenges to respond to; development/prototyping of products & services; deployment of innovation; diversification of cross-sectoral collaborations; and demonstration of economic benefits.
Birmingham City University is a key partner of this project and delivers bespoke support to businesses in three specific areas i.e. Cyber Security, Data & AI, and Future Communication & Networks. Leveraging its excellent knowledge base, cutting-edge facilities, and a track record of supporting businesses nationwide, BCU offers bespoke support to facilitate rapid testing, prototyping and deployment to foster growth for businesses in West Midlands.
What impact will the research have?
The WMHITA project will place the West Midlands at the forefront of UK medical innovation by supercharging a cluster of activity in the Greater Birmingham area with strong regional and national links. It will also create a cluster of commercial activity in this sector, helping to drive regional economic growth and enhance resilience.
The project offers a cohesive programme to accelerate innovation by bringing together partners with diverse range of skills and expertise which are crucial to innovation within Healthtech and its adoption within the regional and national healthcare settings.
