Smart, Sustainable, Green Cities: A State-of-the-Art Review 2023

Project Overview

This state-of-the-art review paper is a peer-reviewed academic paper that provides an overview of the current research on three categories of liveable cities, Smart, Sustainable, and Green (SSG). It explores how the discussions about these three categories have been brought together in the literature and identifies an integrated approach to developing more liveable cities of the future.

The review focuses on recent publications and research trends, with an emphasis on the most significant contributions to the convergence of the SSG categories. Special attention is paid to finding gaps in current knowledge and provides a comprehensive and up-to-date summary of the current state of research in SSG for developing more liveable cities. A summary of the main findings supplies a holistic view of liveable future cities and implications for further research, policy and practice.

Project Impacts

The conclusions reached by this study provides new insights for scholars, practitioners, policymakers, city authorities, consultants, and solution providers for SSG cities:

  • Integrated approaches: Planning for the development of SSG cities should be integrated and coordinated, taking all the best practices from the three concepts of SSG into account.
  • Collaboration: All stakeholders, including government agencies, private sector companies, community organisations, and residents, should work together to develop a shared vision for the city
  • Look for synergies: A more integrated and creative starting point for SSG urban planning can help develop greater synergies across sectors, reduce or help redress, negative trade-offs.
  • New Behaviours: Requires stakeholders to be willing to engage with broader perspectives beyond their own main interests and place societal long-term well-being and equity at the core of decision-making.
  • Alternative finance: The financing of the development of SSG cities, which requires appropriate models, such as green finance and public–private partnerships to ensure access to the resources
