This research explores police use of Tasers and of force more generally, in order to to ensure that Tasers are used in accordance with ethical, legal and accountability frameworks.

Research background
This is a funded PhD study which critically examines police use of Taser.
The research examines three key areas:
- The legislation and training which provides governance for Taser use
- Police use of the Taser system which specific examination of case examples
- Public perceptions of police use of Taser, and factors which influence these
Research aims
The aim of the research is to critically examine the use of Taser within the police and general perceptions regarding its use. The outcome of the research is to ensure that Tasers are used in accordance with ethical, legal and accountability frameworks.
Research methods
The principle methodological approach for this project is a Life History Methodology in order to contextualise both the system and the relationships within the lives of those who implement it or encounter it. Interviews and surveys will be used to build a grounding for sub-studies regarding specific aspects of its use and perceptions of its use.
Projected outcomes
It is hoped that the research will offer valuable insights for policy and practice regarding police use of Taser, and of force more generally.
