BAME in health and social care research

Funded by East Leicester General Medical Practice, this project explores researchers’ viewpoints and learning of a toolkit designed to increase Black Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) groups in health and social care research.

Ethnic minorities' health and social issues are often neglected

Researchers

Research background

Despite reporting poorer health outcomes, ethnic minorities are underrepresented in health and social care research. Inclusion of BAME groups in research is necessary to avoid inequalities, and increase the representativeness of a health and social care evidence base (Mason et al. 2003). This makes obtaining good quality research information from, and with, these groups even more important.

Research aims

The aim of this project is to understand researchers' learning and viewpoints of a toolkit which is designed to increase BAME groups in Health and Social Care research. This toolkit aims to capture best practice and provide researchers with a framework on how to improve the participation of BAME groups in research.

Research methods

Workshops and interviews will be carried out with various research project teams, to gain their perspectives of this toolkit. This will enable improvements to be made to the toolkit where necessary, and improve the representation of BAME groups in health and social care research.
