Andy Stanciu
Criminology, Policing and Investigation – BA (Hons)
Andy always knew he wanted to help others and work in the fast-paced emergency services. Studying at BCU has given him the experience and expertise to make positive changes in his home country of Romania and help the local community as a volunteer fire fighter in Birmingham.
“I’ve always had a keen interest in the police force and emergency services. My family members have worked in the police and military services in Romania, so I grew up hearing their stories as well as watching police and crime drama on TV. I’m also a bit of an adrenaline junkie so I knew I wanted a career that was fast-paced and exhilarating.
I'd always wanted to join Romania’s Secret Service Academy but when I finished school, I decided to look into explore other options and decided I wanted to expand my knowledge of policing and investigation on a global scale.
I decided apply for different courses in the UK, and BCU’s Criminology, Policing and Investigation really stood out to me. The course covers lots of different topics within those areas, so I knew it would be perfect for me to develop my skills and knowledge about policing.
One of my favourite things about my course is my tutors. Some of them have been working in the police or government services for a really long time, so it’s great to learn from them about the system in the UK. It’s interesting to get their insight and hear about their experiences. I find it interesting to compare things with emergency services at home in Romania.
My tutors inspired me to start my own charity in Romania as many of them are involved in the local community as well as police work. I saw how they work with others and support charities that help victims of assault and abuse and it made me realise that there’s nothing like that in Romania. My charity provides resources and organises activities that help victims of sexual, mental and physical abuse. We provide first aid courses, educational courses and lots more support.
BCU has also encouraged me to get involved in the community here. I've now become a volunteer for the West Midlands Fire Service. Last year I was awarded the certificate for the Volunteer of the Year, which was really rewarding.
Getting involved in these kinds of roles is always going to be challenging. As a first responder or someone working within the police, you will see things that are shocking but giving back to the community makes it worth it. I love being in a position to help others and transform my community.
The Criminology, Policing and Investigation course has taught me more than only the skills you need to work in the police force, it’s given me the chance to go into lots of different careers. I’ve developed the ability to work well in a team, communicate with people from different backgrounds and how to work under pressure. I know that all of these skills will benefit me in my future career.
After I graduate, I want to stay in the UK and get a job with the police. I want to experience policing and investigation in the UK first-hand and give back to the community that welcomed me three years ago. Thanks to my course and the knowledge I developed, I know that I’ll make a positive impact and face all the challenges the role brings head-on.
To me, ‘I am BCU’ means fitting into a new community. The staff, students and support have got me through difficult moments, pushed me to get involved and helped me make the most of my time here.”
