Dhanusha was motivated to study Law at Birmingham City University after her father, who had been a victim of fraud, lost his case. The incident gave her a strong desire to uphold justice. Despite facing a language barrier, her academic tutors have more than readied her for the world of law, preparing her to help people just like her father.

“When I was in Bengaluru, India, my father lost a case on property rights against the alleged perpetrator. I will always remember what he told me after he lost the case – ‘There is no justice for good’. From then on, I made it my aim never to let anybody suffer the same fate.

At BCU, I have improved my understanding of the law and developed a better problem-solving approach by practising negotiation skills in my daily seminars. There are deadlines to be met and the workload is constant. However, with the continuous support of my personal tutor and connect mentors, I have developed the ability to work under pressure. I also feel I have become a better and a more efficient worker because of the challenges we are set.

Whether it is for a revision query, mental health support or help for financial aid, teachers and personal tutors are always available for you at the Law School. My personal tutor has always treated me equally and encouraged me to accomplish my goals when I was struggling. I firmly believe that this journey at BCU will help me cement my goals and ambitions in the future.

Studying in a country that shares different languages and cultures, I found I was less confident to talk to people and, subsequently, found it difficult to express myself at first. However, with the help of the Students’ Union, I started joining societies, devoting over 1,000 hours of volunteering and creating connections with like-minded people. Also, with the help of friends and the Faculty, I found my understanding of the lectures and presentations increased. After this support and these practical opportunities, I began to overcome my shyness and feel confident to speak up.

I registered for several volunteering opportunities such as the Careers Fair and the Law Conference. I became a BLSS Student Ambassador and School Representative of the Law School. With these wonderful opportunities offered by the University and the Students’ Union, I was awarded ‘Volunteer of the Year 2018’ and ‘BCUSU Executive Award 2018-2019’ runner-up. I am very proud of these achievements. The University has offered me the space to build relationships during my time here with both staff and students across the School and Faculty, and this has helped me to grow in confidence.

To me, I AM BCU means chasing your dreams and doing what you feel passionate about – also, being unafraid and able to think outside the box. Dream Big. When you get it, reach back, pull someone else up, and help them. Don't just aspire to make a living, aspire to make a difference.”
